Where are the sessions held?

I see students in my office, located in the center of Simsbury, CT.  In addition, I Skype/FaceTime/Zoom with students all over the country.

How do the Skype/FaceTime/virtual tutoring sessions work?

Technology has come a long way since I began my tutoring business.  The student and I connect virtually first (over either Zoom or Skype, a free download, or FaceTime, which is installed on most Apple devices).  The student opens up a link I send them (through any web browser), which opens up a virtual whiteboard.  I have a tablet that is linked up to the virtual whiteboard so the student can see everything I’m writing in real time.  Though nothing can replicate a face-to-face session, this is pretty close.

What is your cancellation policy?

I appreciate as much notice as possible, but request that any cancellations be done with at least 24 hours notice.  If less than 24 hours notice is given and I’m unable to fill the spot, payment may be requested.

How are you different than other tutors?

Simply put, I see myself in most of my students. I struggled with math through most of my high school career.  It wasn’t until I had an amazing teacher who took the time to work with me that I realized I had the potential to excel in math. It was through his instruction and guidance that I learned how to be an excellent and effective educator. I strive to take a difficult math concept and put it in simple terms that are easy for the student to understand. Then I relate the topic the student is struggling with to the overall “math picture,” highlighting where the topic will resurface, and how and why it will return.

I’ve tutored many students who have had a tutor before me and they seem to enjoy my easygoing, patient approach to teaching and lighthearted manner in our sessions. Though their previous tutors were highly qualified and extremely bright in the subject, the students all came to the same conclusion: Just because you excel in math does not mean that you will excel in the teaching of it.

How soon should we contact you?

For SAT/ACT prep, it’s never too early to contact me.  For regular subject help, I always suggest that the student see the teacher first for extra help before contacting me.  If that doesn’t help, contact me.

What is your approach to SAT/ACT prep?

Unlike the large tutoring companies that “specialize” in standardized test prep and read from a standardized textbook, I tailor my sessions to the strengths and weaknesses of each student.  Instead of teaching ways to “cheat” the test, I show the student how to complete the problem and make sure they understand the reasoning behind the answer.

How can I save money on your services?

Many of my students choose to meet at my office to get the best rate.  I also offer small group sessions at a discount (standardized test prep and subject tutoring). Please contact me for details.
